Introducing the Votercade Challenge

Welcome to our volunteer, non-partisan campaign to encourage voter participation.

Your vote is critical to the future of our country. The right to vote is fundamental to democracy, and democracies perform better when more people vote. In Wesberry v. Sanders, 376 U.S. 1 (1964), Justice Hugo Black noted:

“No right is more precious in a free country than that of having a voice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, we must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined.”

Throughout the history of the United States, various groups have been excluded and disenfranchised. People have fought hard and sacrificed to establish and maintain the right to vote. For instance, not until 1870, with the establishment of the 15th Amendment, were racial barriers prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. But literacy tests, poll taxes and intimidation still prevented many from voting, and Native Americans were still denied the right to vote until 1924. Women were not permitted to vote until 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Literacy tests were not banned until 1975, and polling places were not required to be accessible for people with disabilities until 1984.

Unfortunately, intentionally or unintentionally, a number of factors continue to suppress and disenfranchise voters, such as long lines, limited voting locations and broken voting machines.

In the midst of the pandemic, we want to encourage as many eligible people as possible to make sure they are registered, and to vote early in the safest, most convenient way possible. So please join us in taking of photo or video of yourself dropping off your ballot, posting it to social media and tagging five friends with the hashtag #VotercadeChallenge!

Casting your vote is an excellent way to take action and make sure your voice is heard. It also is a way to honor those who have marched, fought and sacrificed for the right to vote. Participating in #VotercadeChallenge will help remind others to vote, and amplify participation in our democracy.

Thank You!
